Why You Should Never Delete Reconciled Transactions in QuickBooks Online®

Jim Merritt - May 13, 2026

When using QuickBooks Online®, it’s important to avoid deleting transactions that have already been reconciled.

Once a transaction has been reconciled, it becomes part of your official accounting history. Deleting it can cause your account balances to change and may throw off future bank reconciliations.

This often leads to:

  • Incorrect beginning balances

  • Reconciliation discrepancies

  • Inaccurate financial reports

  • Extra cleanup work for you or your accountant

Instead of deleting reconciled transactions, consider:

  • Editing the transaction if minor corrections are needed

  • Voiding the transaction to preserve the audit trail

  • Consulting a QuickBooks® expert before making major changes

A simple deletion today can create hours of frustration later. When in doubt, don’t delete reconciled transactions in QuickBooks Online®!
